Can AI replace a tutor for my child?

Short answer

Not fully. Well-designed AI tutoring can add daily practice and instant explanations, and some trials show real learning gains, but unrestricted chatbots can also hurt learning. A good human tutor is still better at spotting gaps, motivating and holding a child accountable. Many families do best with AI for practice and a person for targeted help.

AI can do part of a tutor's job well, and it's available at 9pm on a Sunday, but it can't yet replace a skilled human tutor for a child who is struggling. The honest answer depends on what you need the tutor for.

What the research shows

The evidence is early but becoming clearer, and it points in two directions.

The pattern: AI helps when it is designed and used like a tutor (guiding, questioning, making the child do the thinking) and hurts when it acts like an answer machine.

What each does best

AI tutor Human tutor
Unlimited patience and repetition Spots why a child is stuck, not just that they're stuck
Available any time, instantly Builds a relationship and motivation
Explains the same idea five different ways Notices anxiety, tiredness or confidence dips
Low cost per session Holds a child accountable week to week
Lets a shy child ask "silly" questions Knows the exam board, syllabus and teacher expectations

When you still need a person

In these cases AI can support a human tutor between sessions, but it shouldn't be the plan on its own.

When AI may be enough

How to choose an AI tutor

Look for:

  1. Explanations before answers. It should ask questions and give hints.
  2. Age adaptation. An explanation for an 8-year-old should sound different from one for a 14-year-old.
  3. Parent visibility. You should be able to see what your child asked and how it answered.
  4. No advertising and clear child privacy protections.
  5. A habit of checking understanding, not just finishing tasks.
