There are at least forty products that market themselves as AI for kids. Most are fine, some are great, a few are actively harmful. Rather than rank them here, the more durable skill is learning to evaluate one yourself. Here's what we'd check:

  1. Does it calibrate to age? If the answer to a 5-year-old is the same as the answer to a 12-year-old, it's not a kid tool.
  2. Does it filter inputs, not just outputs? Ask it something borderline. If it refuses to engage with the topic even at an age-appropriate level, good. If it lectures then answers anyway, it's adult AI in disguise.
  3. Is there a real parent dashboard? Can you see what your child asked this week? Set time limits? Adjust the age profile? If not, the "kid-safe" label is marketing.
  4. How does it handle hallucinations? Every AI makes things up. Good kid tools say so, teach children to check, and avoid answering questions where being wrong could matter. Silent confident errors are the worst outcome.
  5. What's the privacy policy? Look for a COPPA statement, "we do not train on children's data", and a data retention policy you can actually read. If those aren't present, move on.
