1. Pick a platform built for schools, not retrofitted for them

- Teacher visibility into conversations

2. Get a signed Data Processing Agreement (DPA) before students touch it
Before any AI tool sees a single student's name, query, or piece of work, the school should have, in writing:
- What data is collected — and from whom.
- Where it's stored — country, encryption-at-rest, encryption-in-transit.
- Whether it's used to train models — the answer must be no for student data.
- How long it's retained and how to request deletion.
- Sub-processor list — who else touches the data.
- Incident notification SLA — how fast you're told about a breach.

3. Set age-appropriate boundaries — and enforce them at the platform layer

- 3–5 (ages 8–10) — guided exploration; teacher-defined topic boundaries; conversation history visible to the teacher.

- 9–12 (ages 14–18) — more autonomy, paired with explicit instruction on academic honesty, citation, and AI's failure modes.

4. Make every interaction teacher-supervisable
A non-negotiable test for any classroom AI: can a teacher see, after the fact, every conversation a student had with it?
If the answer is no, the tool fails. Not because teachers should read every line — they won't — but because:
- A student safety concern triggers a need to look back at conversations.
- A parent question ("What did my child ask?") needs an answer.
- An AI-generated answer disputed in an assessment needs an audit trail.

Your one-pager should answer:
- Which AI tools are approved for which year groups?
- What's the acceptable-use rule for students?
- What's the acceptable-use rule for teachers (drafting, grading, IEPs)?
- How is AI use disclosed in student work?
- What happens when the policy is broken?

7. Pilot before you scale
The most common failure mode for AI in schools isn't a safety incident — it's a top-down rollout that teachers resent and quietly ignore.
The fix is unglamorous: pilot first. One classroom. One teacher. Six weeks. Clear success criteria agreed up front (engagement, time saved, learning outcomes, teacher confidence). At the end, write up what worked and what didn't, and only then decide whether to scale.

8. Plan for equity from day one

- Be explicit. Tell students which assignments allow AI, which don't, and what disclosure looks like.

A short letter home covering:
- Which AI is being used, in which years, for what.
- The safety and privacy posture in one paragraph.
- How parents can see what their child is doing.
- A named contact for questions.
