My child understands our language but won't speak it. What can I do?

Short answer

This is very common and is called passive or receptive bilingualism. Keep speaking the language yourself, create situations where your child genuinely needs it (grandparents, playmates, trips), remove pressure and corrections, praise any attempt, and add short daily speaking practice. Understanding is a strong foundation, so speaking can follow.

A child who understands your language but answers in another one is extremely common in bilingual families. It is often called passive or receptive bilingualism. It is not a failure, and it is not permanent. Your child already has the hardest part, understanding. What they need now is reasons, confidence and chances to speak.

Why it happens

What helps

Keep using the language yourself

Don't switch to match your child. Keep speaking your language warmly and naturally. If you stop, you take away their main source of input.

Create genuine need

Children speak a language when someone needs them to:

Lower the pressure

Gentle prompts that work

Make it fun

Songs, games, jokes, cooking together and stories they love. A child who wants to talk about their favourite thing has a reason to find the words.

How long will it take?

There is no fixed timeline. Some children start speaking after a trip or a new friendship. Others move gradually from single words to sentences over months. Many people who grew up understanding but not speaking a family language become active speakers later, because understanding gives them a big head start.

Daily speaking practice without pressure

Some children find it easier to try a language with someone who never sighs, rushes or corrects them in front of others. Askie, a voice-first AI companion for ages 4 to 15, can chat with your child out loud in the language they are learning, starting at their level and talking about what they love. You can read every conversation afterwards, which also shows you which words they already use. See Can AI help kids practice speaking a new language?
